General dental care that takes anxiety seriously
Tandartspraktijk Mathenesse provides anxiety-aware general dental care in Rotterdam. General dentists can discuss clear explanations, your boundaries and pain-control options that may suit the treatment and clinical situation. The practice is affiliated with KNMT and does not claim a specialist anxiety-dentist qualification or specialist anxiety clinic.
What you can expect
- Share concerns and previous difficult experiences
- Discuss what information you want before treatment
- Discuss personal boundaries within safe dental care
- Review pain-control options when clinically appropriate
What does anxiety-aware general dental care mean?
Anxiety-aware care adapts communication and treatment planning to concerns that a patient shares, within the capabilities of a general dental practice. At Mathenesse, care includes clear explanations, discussion of boundaries, pauses and a gradual approach. These measures do not guarantee absence of fear, stress, discomfort or pain.
General dentist or specialist anxiety dentist?
Looking for a dentist who cares for anxious patients in Rotterdam? At Tandartspraktijk Mathenesse, our general dentists give extra attention to patients with dental anxiety. We listen to your concerns, provide clear explanations and discuss your boundaries and treatment options.
What should you tell the practice?
Share what worries you, such as expected pain, needles, sounds or sensations, embarrassment, uncertainty, a previous difficult experience, a long absence from care or concern about being unable to stop. These concerns do not establish a psychological diagnosis. They help the dentist understand what information and boundaries need discussion.
Explanation and informed decisions
The dentist can discuss examination findings, proposed treatment, alternatives, expected benefits and limitations, possible risks, pain-control options and relevant costs. Clear information supports informed decisions but cannot promise that anxiety will disappear. A long absence does not determine which treatment is necessary; assessment of the current oral situation does.
Boundaries, clarification and pauses
Tell the dentist what you find difficult and what information you want before care. Before treatment, we agree on a clear stop signal. You can use it to request a pause. The dentist pauses as soon as it is safe and explains when a procedure needs to reach a safe stopping point first.
Pain control and local anaesthesia
We discuss pain control suited to your treatment and individual circumstances. Local anaesthesia can be used when appropriate. We cannot guarantee a completely painless treatment or injection. Tell us about your medication, allergies and previous experiences with anaesthesia.
Which care is available?
Our care for anxious patients consists of general dental care with explanations, a gradual approach and agreed pauses. This does not mean that sedation, nitrous oxide, treatment under general anaesthesia or medication for dental anxiety are available. Before booking, ask the practice whether the specific care you need is offered. Local anaesthesia is different from sedation or general anaesthesia.
First contact and your introductory appointment
New patients can mention anxiety in the English registration form; existing patients can call the practice. Explain your fears, previous experiences, boundaries and the information you would like. The practice discusses the next step based on your needs, dental situation and its capabilities.
The first contact begins with a conversation about your experiences and preferences. An introductory appointment without treatment is possible; discuss this when arranging the visit. Symptoms may require examination or urgent care. Before treatment, we discuss boundaries and suitable local anaesthesia.
Support at subsequent appointments and after treatment
Discuss your concerns again before the next appointment. Contact us about symptoms or questions after treatment.
When might specialist support be discussed?
Severe, complex or persistent anxiety may call for additional assessment or care in another setting. Discuss the support you need with your dentist. Any referral requires individual assessment; a fixed referral pathway or treatment elsewhere is not promised.
Urgent dental problems
Do not delay urgent contact because of fear if you have severe or increasing pain, swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or trauma. Tell the person answering the call that you are anxious. Use the emergency dental care instructions for urgent dental problems outside practice hours. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires urgent medical assessment.
Costs and insurance
Costs depend on the examination, treatment required, applicable pain-control procedures, appointment planning and any later specialist or external care. Anxiety support is not automatically free. Insurance reimbursement depends on the care actually provided and policy conditions. Ask about expected costs and confirm current coverage directly with your insurer.
