When do you need emergency medical help?
Call 112 for a life-threatening emergency, such as breathing difficulty or unconsciousness. Rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or serious facial injury require urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a dental appointment.
Knocked-out tooth? Act immediately
Baby tooth: never put it back in. Contact a dentist immediately for advice and assessment.
Permanent tooth
- Hold the tooth only by the crown: the white part normally visible above the gum. Do not touch the root. Do not scrub the tooth or wipe it dry.
- If it is dirty, rinse it briefly and gently with milk.
- If you are certain it is a permanent tooth and the injured person is fully conscious and able to cooperate, gently put it back into its original position immediately. Do not force it. Ask the person to bite gently on clean gauze or a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- If it will not go back in, you are unsure whether it is a baby tooth, or there is a risk of swallowing or choking, do not put it back yourself. Immediately place it in a clean container with milk or the injured person’s saliva. Do not let it dry out.
Arrange immediate dental care, even if the tooth has been put back in. Do not wait until the next working day.
During our opening hours, call 010 437 0595; outside our opening hours, call Tandartsenpost010 on 010 455 2155.
Start the first aid above immediately; do not wait for telephone contact before doing so. If possible, ask someone else to call while you help. Follow the telephone instructions about where to attend.
For unconsciousness, breathing difficulty or a life-threatening emergency, call 112. Do not put a loose tooth into an unconscious person’s mouth.

When should you call an emergency dentist?
Call for assessment of severe pain, swelling, persistent bleeding or dental injury. The problems below can need care before a routine check-up. Tell the team if your symptoms are getting worse quickly.
Severe or persistent toothache
Pain that disrupts sleep, eating or daily activities. You do not need to try painkillers before calling.
Swelling or signs of infection
A swollen cheek or gum, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Tell us whether the swelling is increasing.
Broken or displaced tooth
A tooth loosened, displaced or broken after an impact, or a fracture causing pain or a sharp edge.
Tooth knocked out in an accident
For a permanent tooth, start first aid and arrange immediate dental care. Never put a knocked-out baby tooth back in.
Persistent bleeding
Bleeding in the mouth that does not settle with firm pressure using clean gauze. Call for assessment.
What happens when you contact the practice?
Call and describe your symptoms
Explain where the pain is, when it started and whether you have swelling, fever, bleeding or a dental injury. Mention relevant medication and medical conditions.
Discuss the appropriate next step
Our team assesses urgency and available options by telephone. You receive instructions about where and when to attend; do not arrive without arranging your visit.
Examination and treatment advice
At an appointment, the dentist examines the problem and discusses the treatment needed and expected costs. Further treatment or a follow-up appointment depends on the findings.
For an arranged visit, bring identification, insurance details and a current medication list. Keep any broken tooth fragment and bring it with you. Tell us beforehand if you need assistance accessing the practice.
What can you do while arranging help?
First aid can protect your mouth while you arrange professional care. These measures do not replace a dental examination.
- For bleeding, hold clean gauze firmly against the bleeding area and seek advice if it continues.
- Use pain medication only as directed and as appropriate for your medical circumstances. Ask a pharmacist or doctor if unsure.
- Do not place aspirin directly on a tooth or gum.

What does emergency dental treatment cost?
Costs depend on the examination and procedures needed. There is no single total price for every dental emergency. The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) sets maximum tariffs for individual dental procedures. Ask about the expected costs and have the proposed treatment explained to you.
Our practice invoices through Infomedics. Our tariffs and payment information explains treatment estimates and invoices. Tandartsenpost010 has its own treatment and payment process; consult that service’s information for an out-of-hours visit.

Health insurance reimbursement
Routine adult dental care is generally not covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Supplementary dental insurance may reimburse costs within your policy limits. Much routine dental care for children under 18 is covered. Special dental care and certain oral-surgery procedures have separate conditions. Ask your insurer which coverage and personal costs apply to your treatment.

Frequently asked questions about urgent dental care
Can I be seen today?
An appointment today depends on the urgency of your symptoms and available capacity. Call during opening hours for assessment; same-day treatment is not guaranteed. A knocked-out permanent tooth needs immediate dental care. Do not wait until the next working day to arrange help.
Do I need to register first?
No. You can call Tandartspraktijk Mathenesse about an urgent problem even if you are not registered with us. Our team assesses what help is possible. Do not complete a registration form first when you need urgent care: telephone contact allows us to assess your symptoms.
What if I am unsure whether it is an emergency?
Call and describe your symptoms if you are unsure, particularly with increasing pain, swelling, bleeding or injury. You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself. Telephone assessment helps determine the next step. Contact the practice during opening hours and Tandartsenpost010 outside those hours.
Can I request urgent help by email or a website form?
Use the telephone for urgent dental problems. Email and website forms do not provide an immediate telephone assessment. Call 010 437 0595 during our opening hours or Tandartsenpost010 on 010 455 2155 outside those hours. Follow the instructions you receive before travelling.
Can I call about a child with a dental injury?
Yes. Call about a child’s dental injury and explain what happened, which tooth was affected and whether there is bleeding. Never put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. If you are unsure whether it is a baby or permanent tooth, do not reinsert it yourself; seek immediate advice.
What if I am anxious about treatment?
Tell the team when calling that you are anxious about dental treatment and explain your concerns. Ask what to expect at the appointment and which steps are needed. Do not delay seeking help for serious symptoms because of anxiety. The dentist discusses the examination and proposed treatment with you.
Will all treatment be completed at the emergency appointment?
Not always. After examining you, the dentist determines what care is needed and possible. An urgent visit can focus on the immediate problem; further treatment may require another appointment. Discuss the recommendation, expected costs and next steps before treatment. The examination establishes what your situation requires.
